These fossilized eggshell fragments come from a giant Saltasaurus nest site in Patagonia, Argentina. (See the History | Science drop-down section below for more information) They are so fascinating in their texture and detail, the same as when they were hatched millions of years ago! As they are getting more rare, we're excited to be able to offer these fossilized dinosaur eggshells, framed in 5" x 5" floating frames.

Each egg shell fragment is uniquely beautiful, and you can trust us to intuitively choose the perfect one for you!

History | Science

This eggshell comes from the egg of a Saltasaurus, which means "lizard from Salta" after the Salta Province in Argentina where the fossils were first discovered in 1975. Saltasaurus was a "small" titanosaurid that lived during the end of the Cretaceous Period about 70 million years ago. Although small for an ancient sauropod, the Saltasaurus was still quite large by modern standards, reaching a length of around 28 feet and weighing close to 3 tons. The Saltasaurus was the first sauropod discovered to have bony plates called osteoderms planted in its skin, although more titanosaurid have been found with them since its discovery.

This eggshell fragment was found in Patagonia, Argentina, an important site where hundreds of Saltasaurus nests were found together. Female Saltasaurines dug the nests, probably using their back feet, and buried them under dirt and vegetation. The nests consisted of around 25 4-5 inch eggs each, some of which were found whole with fossilized embryo. The fossilized whole eggs are being studied by scientists, but until recently, Argentina released some broken egg fragments for export to collectors. Argentina has since began to close their export of dinosaur fossils, which will make these egg fragments increasingly rare.

Metaphysical Properties

In the metaphysical community, eggs have long been a symbol of protection, structure, and rebirth. We have not been able to find any theories or studies on the metaphysical properties of fossilized eggshells, however. But as is the case with other fossilized things such as wood, fossilization lends itself to the concepts of longevity, constancy, and ultimately, wisdom and a connection between time, past and present.
Together, we feel as though these eggshells have a nurturing and transformative energy, allowing one to feel connected and protected.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
