As soon as we saw these beautiful African Bloodstone (also known as Setonite) flame carvings, we knew we needed them to be part of our Spooky Season this year! We love their twinkling spots of pyrite, swaths and drops of red jasper, and lovely dark chalcedony!

This flame is almost 3.75" tall x about 2.25" wide.

History | Science

African Bloodstone is the common name of the mineral aggregate Setonite, a mix of red jasper, grey chalcedony, and pyrite. Although it is commonly found in Africa, it can be found in many places around the world.
Setonite or African Bloodstone, was used as far back as Ancient Egypt, where it has been found carved into amulets and small statues. It has also been found amongst Roman ruins, where it was believed to physically stop bleeding and aid in healing. During Medieval times, it was seen as a stone that was created by the dripping of Christ's blood on the cross. Because of this, it has gained an association with Easter.

Metaphysical Properties

African Bloodstone is a stone of energetic healing and protection against negative energies. Its long-time association with blood comes from its swaths of red jasper, but rather than a negative thing, ancient cultures believed that it was a stone that would literally stop bleeding. We don't subscribe to crystals as an answer to medical issues and believe the ER would be a much better place for someone who is physically bleeding, but much like blood runs throughout the system, bringing oxygen and needed nutrients throughout the body, African Bloodstone carries with it much-needed energetic healing as well as amplification and abundance throughout one's own energy.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
