Orange Agatized Ammonite Fossil Pair

Ammonoids are a group of extinct marine molluscs in the class Cephalopoda, a class which they share with animals today such as their cousin, the Nautilus, as well as Squid and Cuttlefish. Ammonites appeared during the Devonia Period and vanished during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. This ammonite, found in Majanga, Madagascar, comes from the Cretaceous Period.

Ammonites can be distinguished by their septa, the dividing walls that separate the chambers within their shell. During fossilization, those chambers were filled with silica-rich water, and with time and pressure, the silica, along with the trace minerals trapped within, agatized leaving behind the beautiful orange crystalline structure we see in these ammonite pairs.
