Blue Chalcedony Moon Carvings

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, meaning that it is made up of such small crystals that its structure can only be vaguely seen, even microscopically, by using polarized light. It has a bit of a waxy luster and lies somewhere between semi-transparent and fully translucent.

The name Chalcedony comes from the Latin word "chalcedonius" which is probably derived from the ancient port town of Chalcedon in Asia Minor.

While many silica materials are considered to be chalcedony (such as carnelian, chrysoprase, and even agate), Blue Chalcedony is one of the few that does not have a separate trade name. It gets its color from the Tyndall Effect, a fascinating phenomenon that gives Blue Chalcedony its characteristic "glow from within" appearance. The Tyndall Effect is the phenomenon that happens when light is scattered through a fine suspension of particles. Since blue light is scattered more than red, a blue hue is seen. This is also the effect that gives a blue hue to smoke from tobacco and motorcycles

The Blue Chalcedony on the market today is primarily found in Namibia, though evidence of mining from Turkey dates all the way back to ancient times, perhaps as far back as 2500 BCE. It has been found in many other places, as well, including the Americas.

"Calming" is a property of all blue stones, but Blue Chalcedony takes it to a higher level- or perhaps we should say, a more inner level. With its characteristic "glow from within", Blue Chalcedony's energy focuses on the peace that comes from inner calm and deep truth, allowing it to radiate outward in the form of peace for oneself and communication with others. Its energy feels like a cool breeze on a warm day, soothing and nostalgic. It is an excellent stone to carry for anyone who is engaging in public speaking or performance of any kind!
