Larimar is the trade name for a blue variety of Pectolite that is found exclusively in the Dominican Republic around the province of Barahona in the Miocene-Era Volcanic rocks at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range, making it exceedingly rare. Though mining rights to a stone that is almost definitely Larimar was requested by a local priest in the early 1900s (and unfortunately denied by the Dominican Republic Government at the time), Larimar was officially discovered by Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling in 1974 and was named after Méndez's daughter, Larissa, and "Mar", the Spanish word for "Sea". The stone had previously been called the Blue Stone by the natives of the area who believed that it came from the sea.
Larimar's unique blue coloring and water-like patterns comes from copper, which is substituting Calcium.

Metaphysical Properties
Larimar was once known as the Blue Stone from the sea by the Native peoples of the Dominican Republic, and with its gentle wave-like patterns and distinctly soothing energy, it is easy to see why it might have reminded them of calm, Caribbean beaches.
In addition to its soothing and peaceful nature, Larimar is an excellent stone of communication, especially during conflict, as it promotes compassion, enhanced intuition, and a release of negative feelings and blockages.

Photography
Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!
Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.
No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.
When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.
We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!
We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
