These little Knightia fish are frozen in time 50 million years ago, swimming in a limestone matrix found in what was once called the Fossil Lake in the Green River Formation of Wyoming. In addition to the two detailed fish, there is a tiny extra fish at the bottom left!

This plate is 7" x 5.25" with fish that each measure about 2.5" long (except for the extra baby fish at the bottom left.) It comes with the pictured acrylic easel stand.

History | Science

Knightia is an extinct genus of bony fish that lived in the warm fresh waters of North America and Asia during the Eocene epoch, which lasted from around around 66-34 million years ago.
These Knightia fish were found in the Green River Formation of Wyoming, an area that is part of an ancient lake called "Fossil Lake" that covered 1500 square miles of what is now Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado around 52 million years ago. Of the 27 species of fish that have been found within the layered limestone in this site, Knightia is the most prevalent.
Knightia were relatively small, schooling fish that were an abundant food source for the rest of the lake, the evidence of which has been found in the fossilized stomachs of many types of larger fish.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
