Moss agate gets its name from the intriguing green, mossy filaments threaded throughout. It's a favorite here at The Triceratory; we think it feels like exploring a dense, ancient forest beneath the surface of the stone. No two are the same!

History | Science

Moss agate isn't technically an agate, and of course it contains no actual moss. It is a variety of chalcedony, belonging to the quartz family, and is often found as fragments from weathered volcanic rock formed in fissures or as pebbles rather than in traditional agate layering.
Moss agate is primarily found in India, Brazil, Uruguay, central Europe, and the western United States.

Metaphysical Properties

Moss agate is known as the gemstone of Gaia, as it brings the viewer back to nature with just its colors and patterns, providing a sense of calm and emotional balance while also encouraging growth and expansion.
It's not a coincidence that we think of a magical, ancient forest!
As with just about all primarily green stones, moss agate is also said to be a stone of abundance.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
