Optical Calcite, also called Iceland Spar due to its place of discovery, is a transparent variety of calcite that has been used in demonstrating polarization of light. This phenomena has been studied by Christiaan Huygens and Isaac Newton, but it has a fascinating history stretching back into ancient times when it was used by the seafaring Vikings for navigation. In more recent times, Optical Calcite has been used in optical equipment due to its properties of double refraction.
In addition to Iceland, where the largest mines still exist, Optical Calcite can be found in the Southwestern US and Mexico along with Madagascar and areas of China.
