History | Science

Oviraptor is an extinct, 5-7 foot, feathered genus of dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period (66+ million years ago) with a rather undeserved bad reputation!
Oviraptor's name corresponds with the once-common belief that its main source of nutrition was dinosaur eggs. It even earned the nickname of "Egg Thief" amongst the paleontology community, due to the original holotype (still considered as such today) that was found in association with a nest of Ceratopsian eggs in Mongolia in 1923. This was the prevailing belief, in fact, all the way until the 1990s when numerous oviraptors were found in nesting poses, suggesting that the dinosaur was actually brooding, not stealing the eggs!

And then, around the same time this new information was moving toward the mainstream, another member of their family was terrifying the masses in the Jurassic Park movies. The reality: Imagine a toothless, horny-beaked emu coming after you in an industrial kitchen. Still kind of terrifying, but maybe not as dramatic for a movie scene! Scientists also believe oviraptors most likely had a crest similar to that of modern-day birds.

These pieces of Oviraptor egg were found in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, not far from where the original Oviraptor was discovered.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
