Peridot, sometimes called "Chrysolite," is a yellow-green gem variety of the mineral Olivine. It is an exceptionally unusual stone in that it is formed, not in the earth's crust, but in the upper mantle, where it is then pushed to the surface through volcanic activity. That is- when it is formed on the earth at all, as it is also found in Pallasite meteorites!
Peridot is also unusual in that it is one of few gemstones that are only found in only one color- shades of green. The depth of the green coloring is due to the amount of iron present.
Though the etymology of "Peridot" is uncertain, with possibilities coming from both Anglo-Norman and early Arabic languages, the earliest known mention of it is a register for St. Alban's Abbey in 1705. It has been mined since ancient times, however, as early as 1500 BC, when it was mined by the Egyptians, who believed it was associated with the protective qualities of the sun, driving away darkness and fear. Some historians believe that Cleopatra's famed Emerald collection was actually primarily Peridot.
Now, although Peridot is found in very small amounts around the globe, the principal source is found in the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona.

Metaphysical Properties
Peridot is a rare gem with quite a history- from its formation deep in the earth's mantle, pushed to the surface via volcanic activity, to its use as far back as Ancient Egypt as a protective gem, driving away darkness with the power of the sun. Peridot seems to borrow other energetic qualities from the sun, as well, as a stone of renewal and growth. It is a stone that says that though your strength was built in darkness, you have now reached the light, and it is time to thrive!

Photography
Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!
Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.
No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.
When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.
We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!
We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
