History | Science

Unicorn stone, a recent find from Madagascar, is a form of pegmatite, an igneous rock with a course texture and large, interlocking crystals of different sizes, commonly composed of mica, quartz, and feldspar.
In the case of Unicorn Stone, the mica is Lepidolite, which lends Unicorn Stones their sparkly, purple hew.
The quartz is Smokey Quartz, a variety of quartz in which natural radiation has activated aluminum impurities. Smokey Quartz shows up in Unicorn Stone as cloudy, greyish areas.
The feldspar is Cleavelandite, which is a variety of albite that gets its name from Parker Cleveland, the Bowdoin College professor who penned the first minerology textbook in the US, is a variety of albite. Cleavelandite forms the cream-yellow areas.
The bright bursts of red-pink sprinkled throughout the Unicorn Stone are Pink Tourmaline, a silicate commonly found in feldspars and known in the jewelry world as rubellite.

Metaphysical Properties

Unicorn Stone gains its metaphysical properties from the 4 minerals that form its makeup.
Lepidolite is a stone of balance and stability.
Smoky Quartz is a grounding stone that brings calm and purifies negative energies.
Pink Tourmaline is a heart-centered stone of love and courage.
And Cleavelandite helps to keep focus on the positive aspects of change.

Altogether, Unicorn Stone is known as a stone of transformation, a support in times of challenging changes.
If the Tower Card in the tarot had a big pillow at the bottom, that would be the Unicorn Stone. You'll still need to jump as things are burning down around you, but you'll feel a lot more supported and at peace in the transition.

Photography

Although we always strive to provide clear, accurate images of our crystals and other products, we photograph under professional lighting, which is meant to mimic sunlight. If you get your crystal and think it looks a little different under low or artificial light, try checking it out again in sunlight!

Our crystals are one-of-a-kind art, created by nature.

No two pieces are the same, and there is no such thing as "perfection" in nature.

When it comes to our hand-carved items, remember that artists work with and around imperfections, druzy pockets, and other natural variations to bring each carving out of a piece of natural stone.

We consider these imperfections to be one of the most wonderful parts of crystal collecting, and we invite you to embrace each carving's uniqueness!

We will always try to portray each piece honestly, so be sure to look closely at our images and videos to ensure you know what to expect.
